Prolific Beginner's Guide: How to Get Paid for Research Studies

IIf you've been looking for honest online work that pays real money, not points or gift cards, you've probably heard of Prolific. This guide explains what it is, who can join, how to get approved, what beginners actually earn, and how to avoid the mistakes that get accounts banned.

What is Prolific?

Prolific is a platform that connects everyday people with researchers at universities, AI labs and big brands. These researchers need real human opinions and decisions. You take their short studies, such as surveys, psychology tasks, opinion polls and AI evaluation tasks, and they pay you in cash.

It was started at Oxford in 2014, and it's known for treating participants fairly:

  1. There's a minimum pay rate. Researchers must pay at least £6 / $8 per hour.
  2. Screen-outs are paid. If a study screens you out, you usually still get a small “thank you” payment.
  3. You're paid through PayPal, in your local currency.
  4. Studies come often. New ones appear on the dashboard throughout the day.

An independent academic study also found that Prolific gave researchers the highest data quality at the lowest cost when compared with MTurk, Qualtrics and CloudResearch.

Who can join?

Prolific is open to residents of around 40 mostly developed countries, including the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, most of Europe, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Brazil, Mexico, Chile and the UAE. Some countries are excluded, and the list changes from time to time, so always check Prolific's current supported-countries page before you sign up.

Important: you must live in a supported country and sign up from there. Prolific verifies your ID, and it checks your location, device and IP address. Using a VPN or someone else's details to get around this almost always ends in a ban, and you lose any money in the account.

You will also need:

  1. A valid email address and a computer with Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari
  2. Stable internet
  3. Only one account per person, because duplicate accounts get banned

How to sign up and get accepted

  1. Join the waitlist (about 3 minutes). Go to prolific.com/participants, click “Sign up”, and enter your email, country and language. Approval can take a few hours or a few weeks, depending on demand.
  2. Accept your invite. You'll get an email, so check spam too. Create your login and fill in your “About You” profile: age, job, education, languages and so on. The more you fill in, the more studies you'll qualify for.
  3. Verify your ID (about 15 minutes). Prolific uses Stripe Identity. You take a photo of your government ID and a selfie. This is why researchers trust the platform.
  4. Set up PayPal. Use a PayPal account in the same name as your ID. Your first 4 cashouts take up to about 9 days. After that, transfers are instant.

How studies work

  1. A study appears on your dashboard with its title, pay and estimated time.
  2. You answer a few quick questions to check if you qualify.
  3. You complete the study. That could mean answering questions, watching videos, rating AI responses or playing decision games.
  4. You submit it, and the researcher approves it. Most approvals happen within a few days.
  5. The money moves into your balance, and you can withdraw once you pass the minimum.

If your work is rejected unfairly, reply politely inside the platform with your reasons and screenshots. Prolific supports participants in genuine disputes.

What can a beginner really earn?

Be realistic here. Prolific is great extra income, not a full salary for most people. Earnings depend on your country, your profile and how often you check the dashboard.

  1. Casual (1–2 hours a week): around £15–£40 / $20–$60 a month
  2. Focused (8–12 hours a week): around £150–£350 / $200–$450 a month
  3. Heavy users (20–30 hours a week): £500+ / $650+ a month, but this is rare

Earnings vary because people in the US, UK and Canada usually see the most studies, and because studies come in waves. A complete profile also unlocks far more studies.

Cashing out

  1. Payment method: mainly PayPal. Some regions can use other options for the first few payouts.
  2. Minimum cashout: £6 / $6
  3. First 4 payouts: up to about 9 days, while Prolific checks your account
  4. After that: instant PayPal transfers
  5. Taxes: you are responsible for reporting your earnings where you live

Tip: cash out small amounts early to build trust, and don't change your name, address or country without contacting support first.

Which studies to take first

Take these first:

  1. Short studies (3–8 minutes) that pay well for the time
  2. Studies with high base pay or a promised bonus
  3. AI evaluation and conversation studies, which usually pay well
  4. Multi-part studies with a completion bonus

Skip these, or leave them for last:

  1. Long studies that pay only the minimum rate
  2. Studies with lots of long written answers
  3. Anything that asks you to install a strange browser extension
  4. Studies with a vague title and no description

How to avoid getting banned

Most bans are avoidable. Accounts usually get flagged for:

  1. An approval rate below 95%
  2. Answering too fast to have actually read the questions
  3. Missing attention checks, such as “select option 3 for this question”
  4. Duplicate accounts, or a VPN that doesn't match your country

Protect yourself by reading every question carefully and taking breaks between studies. Never use AI to answer studies for you, because researchers can tell. Keep screenshots of attention checks and any bonus promises.

7 habits of people who earn more

  1. Fill in your “About You” profile completely. This is the biggest one.
  2. Install the Prolific Assistant browser extension so you're alerted the moment a study appears.
  3. Check the dashboard at busy times: UK mornings, US evenings and weekday lunch breaks.
  4. Look out for niche studies that match your job, skills or background. These often pay more.
  5. Keep track of researchers who reject you, and avoid their studies.
  6. Join the r/ProlificAc community on Reddit to hear about changes early.
  7. Spend your first month learning, not chasing money. Get your first 4 cashouts done, learn which studies fit you, then scale up.

Quick answers

Is Prolific legit? Yes. It has run since 2014 and is widely used by universities and AI companies.

Can I use it on my phone? Yes, but most studies are built for desktop, so a laptop or PC works best.

Why am I not seeing studies? Usually your profile is incomplete, or you're not checking often enough. Fill in every “About You” section and use the Prolific Assistant extension.
